when the photographer becomes the photographee…

The #1 question I am asked about photography is: “So how on earth do you pick a wedding photographer for yourself?!”

You might think that task would be really difficult, but it was actually pretty easy. Because I already know a lot of photographers in Vancouver, the hardest part of the process – doing all the research – was already done. I sometimes feel really sorry for brides who are looking for a wedding photographer, because there are so many! You could spend weeks upon weeks pouring through websites, determining what style you like, who ‘gets’ you, who is in your price range, who is even available on your date… it’s a lot of work!

Our wedding photographer is Jamie Delaine. She is young, fun, super cool, super talented, has the best laugh EVER, and is totally easy going. I love so many Vancouver photographers, but my biggest criteria were:

1) Finding someone who could catch Adam smiling. (He can’t stand having his picture taken.)

2) Finding someone who wouldn’t make Adam feel like he was posing like a fashion model (which would lead to immediate shut-down).

3) Someone who’s work I LOVED.  (I would call Jamie’s work natural, clean, bright, and happy).   :)

4) Someone who was really nice and really fun. (Because they would be spending the entire day with us – such a huge part of the wedding day.)

That was pretty much it, and Jamie fit the bill perfectly. We did our engagement session with her about three months ago, and I am so so so happy with the pictures.   Lots of you have probably seen these either on Jamie’s blog or facebook, but I figured they should make an appearance on here too.

Here are some of my faves:

This one is in my wallet in black and white. :)

I have been wanting to take a picture under this tree like, for ever. It’s right across the road from my house, and I always glance at it on the road as I pass it. The light was oh so perfect for this shot. I’m definitely printing this one on canvas to put in our house.

Like the balloons? Adam didn’t understand why we needed them, but I think they look cute. :)

Could that be a smile from Adam? I think so… :D

And the biggest question of the day… how did Adam feel about the session? He said it wasn’t too bad! He still hates getting his picture taken, but he was really good about it because he knows how important it is to me. :)

(And he still wants to marry me so that’s a good sign, right?)

A couple more things:

1) I’m finally going to see Avatar tonight, so I’m pretty stoked.

2) Update on the competition: We have over 200 votes, and Jessica and Jason are in the lead!  ’Like’ your favourite photo in this Facebook album to cast your vote.

Hope you’re all having an excellent Friday!
