Katie (we call her Kooter) is my big sister, and we have shared a room for pretty much our whole lives (except for the time Jenny and I got put together – I like to refer to those as the Dark Ages). Katie and Mike started dating in Grade 12, when they were both involved in the school theatre production of Anne Frank. Here’s where things get awkward – Katie was Anne, and Mike was Anne’s dad. It added a whole new dynamic to the play. ;)
These two lucky ducks have already had a fabulous engagement session with their actual wedding photographer, the fabulous Amber Hughes. (Check out the images from their session with her here.) But what’s the use of having a sister who is a wedding photographer if you can’t get TWO engagement sessions out of it? We talked about it beforehand and decided to get them dressed up all shnazzy-like for the session with Amber, and to go more casual with me so they would have a bit of both.
You’d think because I know these two so well it would make it incredibly easy to take pictures of them. Well let me tell you – it was not! Katie is a chronic blinker, and Mike has some pretty stellar awkward facial expressions up his sleeve. Because I am not a stranger, they felt very comfortable being their very weird selves – which lead to tons upon tons of outtakes. But wait, you say – aren’t those the best ones? Yes – in theory. I LOVE candid shots. But it actually takes a little work to get candids where people look pretty – especially when you are working with a chronic blinker and a face scruncher.
One last thing- most of the time when I ask people to kiss, they just do it because I am the photographer and what I say goes. :D Katie and Mike didn’t. Yeah, I get it – it’s a little awkward kissing in front of your little sis. But suck it up!!! This is how it went down:
Me: “Okay aaaaaand kiss!”
Katie: “What?”
Me: “Kiss!”
Mike: “What?”
Katie: “Huh? We can’t hear you…”
They were four feet from me. Hrrmph.
Anyways, after sorting through the millions of blinks, outtakes, and weirdness, I’m pretty happy with what we got. If you want to check out the whole session, the slideshow is here.
They are getting married next month already and I’m pretty stoked.
To Do:
1) Write maid of honour speech.
2) Find matching bridesmaids slippers though for the reception (I don’t do well in heels for too long).
